The Pimm's Cup

It is Wimbledon time, this means it is also Pimm's Cup time.  What is a Pimm's Cup? A Pimm's cup is the official drink of Wimbledon.  Really there is no one single recipe, every house has their own twist on it with one thing in common, Pimm's #1.  Pimm's #1 is a gin based spirit that dates back to the days of James Monroe's presidency, see you should have paid attention in you 11th grade history class. At its peak in the 70's there were 6 different pimm's spirits however these days they produce only Pimm's #1 and #6, #6 is Vodka based. Anyways back to the reason for this post, it is Pimm's cup time at the Alley, if you have never tried one you need to!! Light, refreshing, great flavor and perfect drink to help unwind after a hot summer day..

"It may look like a dive, but since re-opening under new ownership in August, The Alley Bar has set the standard for professionally crafted cocktails. On this particular Friday night, there were no less then six bartenders squeezing fresh cucumbers and citrus by hand for the evening's most refreshing cocktail. One group of judges planted themselves at the far end of the bar, content to have several of the freshly made martinis rather then venture out to the other participating venues. An informal straw poll showed The Alley Bar as the strongest contender to dethrone The Black Pearl."

While making Manhattans, Tipperarys, Negronis etc, you get the point, we often get asked about Carpano. “What is that”, “Can i see the bottle” I often try and explain it in term the costumer can relate to, “There is Yugo and there is Mercedes, this my friend is Mercedes” but really when it come down to it, there is right and wrong and Carpono Antinca is right and has been for over 200 years..George Washington didn’t even take office till three years after Carpano was being made, i think you get the point..

Antica Formula is a red fine vermouth, made from an original recipe by Antonio Benedetto Carpano dating from 1786. After experimenting various , different tests, he succeeded in creating the incomparable time-honored recipe. Formula is produced in limited quantity with wise craftsmanship, and edited in precious numbered bottles of blown glass, topped with a cork. The label is a faithful replica of the 1786 original one.
